FOLK AND TRADITIONAL ARTISTS AWARDED FELLOWSHIPS

Idaho – The Idaho Commission on the Arts is excited to announce the recipients of the 2027 Folk and Traditional Arts Fellowship: Anika Smulovitz, silversmithing (Boise), Chris Cheney, saddle making and silversmithing (Rexburg) and Jose Luis “de la Tota” Bermudez Peña, percussionist, entertainer and vocalist (Boise). These individuals demonstrate our state’s living cultural heritage and the invaluable effort to uphold traditions that span generations. The fellowships, awarded every two years, recognize outstanding artists and honor work deemed to exhibit the highest artistic merit. Fellowship awardees receive $5,000 each.

The wide range of skills, unwavering dedication to their craft and the breadth of both geographic and cultural diversity represented in the recipients and their art characterize Idaho’s historic and living traditions. Each recipient embodies a lifelong mastery of skills, techniques and adaptation that are highly valued within their community. Additionally, their commitment to passing down their knowledge ensures these values are perpetuated, proudly representing Idaho’s cultural legacy.
